Community comes together to complete new classroom at the Rural Outreach Center
The Kiwanis Club of East Aurora has completed construction of a multi-purpose classroom addition at the Rural Outreach Center (ROC), located at 730 Olean in East Aurora. The new facility will enable the ROC to provide programs — including healthy living, financial literacy, self-care and other classes — to help people living in the rural areas of southern Western New York become self-sufficient.
A dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Members of the Kiwanis Club as well as individuals and businesses who assisted with the project will be recognized at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to visit the new facility at 6:30 p.m.
A unique aspect of the project involved assistance from the Construction Technology class at the Ormsby Career and Technical Education Center in East Aurora. High school seniors in the program constructed the frame for the building in their shop last winter and erected the shell of the building on the site in May, giving them an authentic experience in the construction industry. Local businesses and individuals specializing in various trades completed the structure over the summer months with the help of volunteers from the Kiwanis Club of East Aurora.
Funding for the project was obtained by club members and included cash contributions, in-kind services and money raised at various Kiwanis fundraising event including the annual chicken barbecue.
